Instead, the Queensland government is giving the thumbs up to upgrades for the oldies but goodies - Suncorp Stadium and the Queensland Sports and Athletics Centre (QSAC).

This pivot comes hot on the heels of a less-than-stellar performance in recent by-elections and is based on recommendations from a thorough review led by former Brisbane Lord Mayor Graham Quirk.

While QSAC, a veteran of the 1982 Commonwealth Games, could have been sidelined, it's now back in the game as a potential Olympic venue.

However, don't expect a shiny new stadium at Victoria Park - the costs were just too sky-high.

The government's playing it smart, focusing on enhancing existing venues and keeping an eye on the budget. 

With a total funding pot of $7.1 billion from state and commonwealth coffers, the plan aims to leave a lasting legacy without breaking the bank.
